The Food You Eat Impacts Your Sleep

Eat these foods to feel more energy during the day and get a deeper sleep at night

The food we eat determines how we look and feel. Sometimes overlooked, it also impacts how we sleep. What we put into our body as fuel and energy contributes to how we go about each day and also impacts how we rest and recover at night.

Breakfast

Ever since I was a kid, I have lived by the motto that breakfast is the most important meal of the day! The first thing we put into our body determines how we approach the rest of the day. According to the Harvard Medical School, the best breakfasts are filled with protein and whole grains. Some energy boosting options to consider would be oatmeal, nuts, berries or almond milk.

Lunch

The best lunch is one that will give you the energy boost you need to get through the rest of your day, but prevents spiking and crashing. Foods like brown rice, sweet potatoes, lentils and quinoa all have a low glycemic index meaning they will be digested slowly and keep your energy consistent.

Dinner

For dinner, it is key to incorporate foods with a source of tryptophan in them to promote a restful night’s sleep. Ground turkey tacos or turkey burgers can be a great option if you are not in the mood for a full on Thanksgiving turkey! Dairy is also a great source of tryptophan, so meals with cheese, yogurt and milk can help you sleep better at night. Most importantly, avoid caffeine after noon so you are not wide awake when bedtime comes around.

Nighttime snack

It is best to avoid late night snacking, especially with foods that are high in sugar that will prevent you from getting a quality night’s sleep. However, if you want to eat or drink something before bed, try a chamomile tea, milk or a banana. Almonds are also a highly recommended snack for better sleep as they are an excellent source of many nutrients and also contain a natural source of melatonin. Avoid alcohol before bed whenever possible as alcohol disrupts our normal sleep behavior.

In addition to the foods we eat throughout the day, the Polar Point Cool Touch Mattress Pad is another great way to promote a healthy night’s sleep. This cool to the touch mattress pad is not only an easy way to add an extra layer of comfort to your overall sleep environment, but is also a great summer option for hot sleepers. Stay cool and comfortable throughout the night with this cool to the touch pad with hypoallergenic fiber fill that provides long lasting support and comfort.
