Fall Into Better Sleep
5 tips for how to sleep better with the changing seasons
Labor Day has officially passed and the time has come for changing leaves and chillier temperatures. When the seasons change is when I experience my worst allergies and become more prone to sickness like the common cold.
When we start to feel sick, stuffy noses and sore throats can keep us awake at night. This is an issue because when we are sick is when we need sleep the most in order to recover and feel like our best selves again.
Sleeping is essential to improve our immune system and gives us energy we need to fight off germs and bacteria. In fact, we need more sleep when we are sick, so if you think you are sleeping too much when you are not feeling great - you’re not! Don’t worry - your body is asking for rest and recovery.
Over the years, I have learned the best tips and tricks to ensure your best night’s sleep when your health may be holding you back:
Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate!
Drink plenty of fluids before bed to hydrate your body and flush out the toxins. If you are napping a lot during the day, make sure you are waking up to drink fluids so your body does not dehydrate and you are still getting the nourishment you need. If you are an allergy sufferer, warm water with lemon and honey is a great solution for congestion and a sore throat.
Add moisture to your environment
As the colder weather approaches and the air starts to get colder, adding a humidifier in your room can help loosen mucus and alleviate irritated noses and throats.
Elevate your upper body
Sleep slightly elevated with a few of your favorite pillows behind you to make breathing easier and allow for your sinuses to drain naturally. I love a good pillow throne when I am stuffy.
Steam is your friend
Hot soup or tea will instantly help your nose and throat feel better and warm up your entire body in the cold fall or winter nights. Taking a hot shower with plenty of steam is another way to help when you feel dried up or stuffy.
Use a pillow protector
The Cotton Pillow Protector from Sleep Number is a great option to reduce allergens and keep your sleep environment clean and fresh. This classic-style cotton pillow protector is constructed with a tight weave that minimizes dust and other allergens that make you feel sick.
As the seasons change and the temperatures start to fall with the leaves, don’t let any sickness or allergies get you down. Cuddle up with a great blanket, your favorite pillow, and get a great night’s sleep tonight so you can create the life of your dreams tomorrow.
