Chasing Your Dreams

Catching up on lost sleep during the week isn’t as easy as you think.

How many of us look forward to the weekend and hope to catch up on lost sleep with a nap on Saturday afternoon or a morning when we don’t have to spring up with the sound of the alarm?

It’s interesting that most people underestimate the amount of time it takes to recover from sleep deprivation and the impact it has on our lives. Sleep deprivation can impact our blood pressure, is linked to metabolic syndrome and diabetes, in addition to learning disabilities, vigilance and other potentially disabling issues. Sleep deprivation can even cause depression.

A new study found that after prolonged sleep deprivation, it takes days to return to regular functions. After 10 days of sleep deprivation, even a week or 7 days of recovery is not enough. And what’s more, study participants believed they had recovered full functions after seven days of recovery when testing instruments showed otherwise.

While there is no definitive answer yet for the question of exactly how much time it takes to recover from sleep loss, study authors and other experts emphasize once again, the necessity of prioritizing a proper amount of sleep each night.

Have you ever suffered from a prolonged period of sleep deprivation? How long did it take you to catch up on that lost sleep? Among other tips one expert noted it is “crucial that your mattress, sheet and bedclothes are comfortable.”
